Christchurch Tour: Ohinetahi

Christchurch Tour: Ohinetahi

Even in the rain the sculpture park and garden at ”Ohinetahi”, Governors Bay, was a spectacular sight!

A group of 40 Friends of Te Papa visited Ohinetahi recently and were welcomed by Sir Miles Warren and Mark Chandler the Head Gardener, with the latter showing the group around the garden, house, and park.

Sir Miles has had large scale sculptured pieces installed around the park land beside the house. Among the formal gardens, the red and white peonies stood out, not at all bowed by the raindrops.

And at almost every turn there was a ‘framed’ view of a part of the garden, a whimsical installation, or a lion with an ivy mane!

After a tour of the ground floor of the house (major restoration after the 2010/2011 earthquake), a delicious morning tea, and visiting Sir Miles’ art collection, we were on our wet way again, very grateful for the hospitality shown and having purchased a book on the “Ohinetahi” house and garden to study when we returned home.
