New Caledonia with Hamish Campbell

New Caledonia with Hamish Campbell

Many of you have loved the experience of a Chatham Islands excursion with Te Papa geologist Hamish Campbell.  Hamish is expanding his annual trips to embrace not only Eastern Zealandia (Chatham Islands) but Northern Zealandia (New Caledonia).

Hamish has detailed knowledge of the geology of New Caledonia as this was the topic of his MSc thesis, undertaken through the University of Auckland in the late 1970’s. His research then, and ongoing research since, has led to many return visits and enjoyable and unique experiences.

Next year Hamish will lead a small geological sampling party for a ten day trip (nine nights) to New Caledonia.  The excursion will start and end at La Tontouta International Airport (Noumea), so all participants would be responsible for arranging their own international flights. For the tour only, the best flights would depart Auckland Saturday 13 July and return on Monday 22 July. However you could explore extending your time in New Caledonia after Hamish’s tour.

The outline of the tour includes three nights in Noumea, one night in Kone, two nights in Poindimie and three nights in La Foa. You will travel on two mini-buses, and the small group of 18 will include three leaders/guides and 15 participants.

The cost of the excursion would be $4,000 per person.  This includes all accommodation, meals, rental vehicle costs, entrance fees and guide costs in New Caledonia. The cost does not include international flights.

If a geology adventure to New Caledonia interests you, or you know someone who maybe, please contact Hamish at [email protected]  for more information and to register your interest.

PS: Hamish will also continue his shorter six day Chathams excursions in September/October 2019.
