2022 Chatham Islands Excursions

2022 Chatham Islands Excursions

Since 2002 these excursions to the Chatham Islands has been offered to, and enjoyed by, many Friends of Te Papa. This year two six-days excursions and two seven-days excursions to the Chatham Islands are on offer, both led by former Te Papa geologist Hamish Campbell and scientist and mezzotint artist Chris Adams.  Touring with Hamish and Chris is a rare opportunity to visit the Chathams in a safe and convivial context. The plan is to visit Chatham and Pitt Island, sea and air conditions permitting.

Anyone is welcome – you don’t have to be a geologist, a Friend of Te Papa, or a citizen of Zealandia. They are about much more than natural science. You will explore Chatham Islands history, culture and cuisine. It is a must do, if you have not yet done it!

Four trips:
Trip 1: Wednesday 31 August to Monday 5 September; 5 nights; ex-Wellington return; $4,600/person.
Trip 2: Wednesday 7 September to Monday 12 September; 5 nights; ex-Wellington return; $4,600/person.
Trip 3: Friday 23 September to Friday 30 September; 7 nights; ex-Wellington return; $5,400/person.
Trip 4: Thursday 3 November to Wednesday 9 November**
(**please note that this excursion is a bit different; it flies from Auckland but returns to Wellington, so connecting travel arrangements will be necessary; 6 nights; $5,000/person.)

Price: $4,250 per person – $5,400 per person.
Air travel ex-Wellington: with Air Chathams
Accommodation: Hotel Chatham, Waitangi, Chatham Island

Capped at 20 people each, the trips are all-embracing in terms of experiencing the Chathams.

However, a certain level of fitness is required: you must be able to negotiate a wire fence in less than 20 seconds. Some people get hung up on this self-fitness test. To avoid this, attempt wire fences only in the presence of an adult.
