At the June AGM, outgoing President Gordon Shroff presented a cheque to Te Papa Chief Executive Rick Ellis. The cheque was payment for Pablo Picasso’s Picador, purchased at a recent auction at Sotheby’s, and a gift from the Friends to Te Papa.
We look forward to viewing the Picasso jug when it is on display in the newly refreshed Level 6 exhibition opening about March next year. The exhibition will consider the way artists and designers have been informed by the past. Picador illustrates how Picasso drew on the Greek ceramics tradition of red-figure decoration for his inspiration. Justine Olsen, curator of decorative art and design, will curate the exhibition.
