Review: A visit to Webb’s Auction House

Recently the Friends of Te Papa were made to feel very welcome on their visit to Webb’s new Wellington auction house at 23 Marion Street. This lovely space opened less than a month ago. For the time being they will not have auctions in Wellington, but will preview some of the art in the Webb’s Auckland auctions and plan to have exhibitions and public programmes.

The current exhibition, which is on until 23 April, was curated by Robert Leonard. Called John Lethbridge Divination: Performance Photographs 1978-1982,  it features a number of large photographic works. These are staged photographs that Lethbridge made in the late 1970s and early 1980s, many featuring performer-assistant Dame Jane Campion, then an art student. The works were brought to life for us by a presentation from Robert. After, we looked at the art on display and chatted.

Many thanks to art specialists Carey Young and David Maskill and their team for their hospitality and refreshments.
