Ngā Toi | Arts Te Papa

Homes are places to retreat to, but they also reflect how we’d like to be seen. The art works in the Open Home exhibition explore what happens when home life goes on display – from model homes to suburban neuroses, lounge room tribalism to financial speculation and designer lifestyles.

Open Home is the latest contemporary art exhibition in Te Papa’s Ngā Toi | Arts Te Papa programme of changing exhibitions drawn from the national art collection. The exhibition offers a snapshot of contemporary New Zealand art practice from 1978-2011, with an emphasis on sculpture and installation works. It includes old favourites, such as Derrick Cherrie’s Sculpture Terrace commission, Studio, 2001, and recent acquisitions by L. Budd and Graham Fletcher.

Open Home features works by contemporary New Zealand artists L. Budd, Derrick Cherrie, Julian Dashper, Neil Dawson, Graham Fletcher and Marie Shannon. It also includes the inventive collaborative installation Gesamtkunsthandwerk, 2011, by jeweller Karl Fritsch, furniture designer Martino Gamper and sculptor Francis Upritchard.

I hope to see you at my curator’s tour of Open Home on Friday 6 November at 11am.
