Modern Girls in Bed

Modern Girls in Bed

Modern Girls in Bed is an irreverent comedy about sisters, strength, and what happens when two young women come face-to-face with five trailblazing wāhine from Aotearoa’s history.

With a seven-strong female cast and a talented team behind the scenes, Modern Girls in Bed premieres from Saturday 1 September – Saturday 22 September 2018 at Circa Theatre.

From a talk to Friends of Te Papa in 2015 by Justine Olsen, Curator of Decorative Art and Design, Friends will remember Helen Hitchings, one of the women appearing in the play.  The glamorous Helen Hitchings opened New Zealand’s first modern art dealer gallery in 1949 and began promoting future icons of New Zealand art and design including Rita Angus, Toss Woollaston, Colin McCahon, and Len Castle. Hitchings also spent time in hospital with tuberculosis and it is during this time in her life that she appears in the play, along with other women from history such as Katherine Mansfield, Kate Sheppard, Heni Pore and Akenehi Hei, all who spent time on bed rest. In the play, the bed is explored as a place of rest and recovery, dreaming and scheming but also confinement – as anyone who has experienced strict orders of bed rest will know!

Friends of Te Papa are offered a discount on full price and concession tickets for performances during the first two weeks of the season (until Saturday 15 September).  The first matinee of the season has a special price of $30.

To receive this discount please use this code at the check-out on the Circa website: ModernFriends.
