Tasmania: History and Heritage Tour – Expressions of Interest

Claudia Moir, manager of our September and October Kaipara tours, has recently been on an educational trip to Tasmania.  She wonders whether the members of the Friends of Te Papa would be interested in a tour specifically designed for Friends of Te Papa members, focused on the rich history and heritage of this island state.

At this point, Claudia is looking for expressions of interest for a 7-day tour in March 2024 with a focus on the natural heritage and convict history of Tasmania. The tour would be mainly based in and around Hobart (with a direct flight from Auckland) and could include a guided walking tour of the historic precinct of Salamanca and Battery Point, a visit to Port Arthur and the Tasman peninsula, the Cascades female factory, the historic town of Richmond, a full day cruise to Maria Island, where you can experience Australia’s unique wildlife, as well as UNESCO world heritage historic sites. We would also visit the Bonorong Wildlife sanctuary, the famous and fascinating MONA (Museum of Old and New Art) and there would be time for some wine and distillery tastings.

Claudia would also like to include the “Tasmanian Heartland experience”, a 3-day tour out of Hobart to the heart of Tasmania with insights from an ecologist, historian and an astronomer.

She asks that if this is something you might be interested in, to please email her with your expressions of interest. If enough people are interested, she will proceed with putting together a detailed tour program and pricing. You are also welcome to make suggestions if there is anything in particular you would like to have included in the tour.
