July has brought some real winter weather, with floods, gales and even snow around the country. Wellingtonians however are a hardy lot, and it takes exceptional weather to prevent the Friends from leaving the fireside. At the height of one recent storm a keen group of art lover Friends enjoyed a wonderful evening at Page Blackie Gallery. Currently on view is a range of beautiful landscape works by some of New Zealand’s greatest artists. Gallery co-owner James Blackie gave us some fascinating insights into the stories behind the works. You can read more about the Friends’ visit here.
The Friends visit to Page Blackie made us keenly aware of how much we all miss Te Papa’s galleries, which are closed at present as the exciting renewal and rebuilding of the art gallery spaces proceeds. You will have noticed the high white walls that have gone up opposite Espresso. Keep watch on these, as the art team have some magical surprises coming up for these walls very soon.
Meantime, the Friends programme can help to satisfy your cravings for art and culture. So regularly check the Friends website for new events coming up, and keep warm, dry and well.
