Award-winning actor Stephen Lovatt is taking a break from Shortland Street to light up the waterfront with a dazzling blaze of joy and exuberance. In Circa Theatre’s Every Kind of Weather, he’s joining forces with Arts Laureate Shane Bosher to celebrate the work of iconic New Zealand playwright Bruce Mason. They’re about to make two of Mason’s greatest plays resound for a new age.
The much-loved classic The End of the Golden Weather is New Zealand storytelling at its finest. The unearthed gem Not Christmas, but Guy Fawkes is profound and true, cheekily confronting our country’s Tall Poppy Syndrome. Performed on alternate nights, these plays are a not-to-be missed theatrical double-shot.
Bruce Mason’s plays are for us and about us. They’re alive with people who are instantly recognisable: the gossipy aunties, the school bully, the grumpy local cop, the mum that’s trying to hold it all together. We all know the pleasure of that first lick of ice cream on a hot summer’s day, the thrill of wrapping paper coming off a Christmas present, that moment where we begin to understand our place in the world.
