President’s Column: July 2018

Ngā mihi

Thank you to those of you who attended the Friends at the AGM on 27 June. It was lovely to see so many of you, as the Committee greatly values your support. The AGM elected Tim Steel as Treasurer and new committee members, Elizabeth Ellis and Christine Turner. The meeting also re-elected me as President, Jillian Wellings as Vice-President, and Jan Blayney, Diana Halsted and Ann Hodson for a further term on the committee. We are delighted to have you all on board. Our warmest thanks to former treasurer, Graeme Mitchell, and committee member Kathleen Willis, who has returned to Canada. Their talents, energy and cheerful willingness to contribute to the success of the Friends will be much missed.

The AGM was a wonderful opportunity for many of you to meet our new Manager, Ms Demi Heath. Demi’s first fortnight in the role has been full-on, as following the AGM Cairo-based Elhamy ElZayat treated us to a wonderful lecture on Egyptian history, in a packed-out Soundings Theatre. The response to the tour to Egypt, exclusive to the Friends offered by Te Papa sponsor Innovative Travel, has been so enthusiastic that a second 2019 tour is now being offered. For more information see here.

At our AGM we were also delighted to hear from Dale Bailey, Director of Collections, Research and Learning, and Director of the Museum Renewal, who gave insights into the exciting programme planned by Te Papa for the next year or so. I know you are all very much looking forward to the opening of the refreshed Natural History exhibitions next year and we look forward to bringing you further updates.

In the meantime, the Friends have some wonderful treats coming up, such as the fabulous series of Fashion lectures. Make sure you book early as these are sure to be very popular! So, keep an eye on our website and ward off the mid-winter chill by joining us at an inspiring event.

Nāku noa, nā
