Te Papa, in conjunction with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, has brought an exhibition of French and American Impressionism from their collection to New Zealand. Many of you will have visited the wonderful Monet and the Impressionists exhibition that was held in the Visa Platinum Gallery in 2009. It remains one of Te Papa’s most popular exhibitions.
Colour & Light features works by well-known French artists such as Degas, Monet, Renoir, Sisley, Cézanne, Corot, Pissarro – and more – alongside the work of American Impressionists like John Appleton Brown, William James Glackens and Leslie Prince Thompson. The exhibition examines the development of the Impressionist movement and its global influence. It pays specific attention to the impact of Impressionism across the Atlantic in the United States.
Colour & Light is the first exhibition in Te Papa’s new Level 4 exhibitions gallery. Chief Executive Michael Houlihan has promised additional space for art and displaying collections – and this is the first new space.
For an overseas touring exhibition, Te Papa is fortunate to have this exhibition for a longer duration than normal. Closing in January next year, you have five months to plan a series of house guests to come Wellington to see the exhibition.
The exhibition Colour & Light: Impressionism from France & America is organised by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
