President’s Column: December 2025

As we draw near to the close of 2025, I am delighted to reflect on what has been an exceptionally busy and rewarding year for the Friends of Te Papa. Our calendar has been filled with events, tours, and opportunities for members to engage deeply with the museum’s collections, New Zealand’s cultural heritage, and the natural world.
These activities demonstrate the vibrancy of our community and the enduring curiosity of our members. Each event has been marked by lively discussion, shared learning, and the joy of discovery.

The last events of the year are equally compelling, December brings the Curators’ Book Talk: Te Taiao Nature Series, offering insights into New Zealand’s natural history publications, and the much anticipated First Breath Opening Party, where members will enjoy late night access and entertainment to celebrate Te Papa’s newest exhibition.
Looking ahead, 2026 promises extraordinary opportunities: the Great Barrier & Waiheke Island Tour in February, the West Coast Loop Tour in March, and international adventures in Vietnam and Cambodia in April plus engaging speakers and experiences both in the lecture theatre and amongst Wellington’s streets, shops and offices.
It is with great excitement that we celebrate Te Papa’s upcoming exhibition Breathe | Mauri Ora – An Immersive Journey into Nature by Marshmallow Laser Feast. This innovative installation invites visitors to experience the interconnectedness of life through immersive art and technology. By blending science, storytelling, and sensory exploration, Breathe | Mauri Ora will allow us to see and feel nature in new ways, reminding us of our place within the living systems of Aotearoa. This exhibition exemplifies Te Papa’s commitment to pushing boundaries and offering transformative experiences. Don’t forget to book your discounted members ticket for Breathe | Mauri Ora.

The Friends of Te Papa community continues to thrive because of your enthusiasm and participation. Whether attending lectures, joining tours, or supporting exhibitions, your involvement ensures that our society remains dynamic and relevant. As we step into 2026, let us carry forward the spirit of exploration and innovation that has defined this year. In doing so we will also be celebrating the new web site. I, for one, cannot wait to applaud the new website and its improved backend functionality.

As the festive season approaches, I extend warm wishes to all our members and supporters. Christmas is a time for reflection, gratitude, and connection. We celebrate not only the achievements of the past year but also the friendships and shared passions that bind us together. May this season bring joy to your homes, peace to your hearts, and inspiration for the year ahead.
On behalf of the committee, thank you for your ongoing support. May you enjoy a restful holiday season, and may the coming year be filled with discovery, learning, and wonder.

Ngā mihi nui,
Mazz Scannell
