Sensational Sculpture at Connells Bay

Sunday 15 February 2015, 9:30 am - 5:30 pm

$150.00

Three days of sculpture, presented by the Friends of Te Papa and the Wellington Sculpture Trust.

The Friends of Te Papa tour to Connells Bay Sculpture Park is now fully booked.

Friday 13 February 2015 :  Bookings are still open to join the Wellington Sculpture Trust on their visit to Gibbs Farm, home to about 25 world-renowned sculptures, several of which have been added since the Friends of Te Papa visit in January 2009. Coach transport leaves the Auckland CBD at 10am. See more details here, where you can register your interest directly with the Wellington Sculpture Trust.

Saturday 14 February 2015:  This day is free for you to head across to Waiheke Island, in your own time, for a walk around the biennial headland SCULPTURE ON THE GULF exhibition.

Sunday 15 February 2015:  (This tour is now fully booked) Today you’ll travel with the Friends of Te Papa to the privately owned Connells Bay Sculpture Park on the east coast of Waiheke Island. It’s a little out of the way from the more populous west coast where regular ferry trips depart, so we have chartered a launch to take us there. On the way we will visit nearby Rotoroa Island: an arts, heritage and conservation park. The park offers many walks and a small award-winning museum showcasing the island’s history. After a leisurely picnic lunch, the launch will take us across to Connells Bay in time for a 2-hour guided walk with owners John and Jo Gow. You will see artworks by New Zealand sculptors where art and nature are united to create special spaces for the sculptures. We then head back across the water to Auckland. Costs are yet to be finalised, but are expected to be about $165 per person. The cost will include return launch travel, admissions, guided tours and a gourmet picnic lunch.  Friends’ members only. Numbers are limited.

Accommodation has been booked at the Copthorne Hotel Auckland HarbourCity. Located right on the city’s waterfront, the hotel provides quick and easy access to Auckland’s Viaduct Basin, CBD, shopping, Ferry Terminal and other harbour activities. All rooms face north with views of the Viaduct and Waitemata Harbour. 25 Superior Double Rooms have been booked for 2 nights: Friday 13 February and Saturday 14 February 2015. The rooms are offered on a first-in, first-served basis. Please indicate whether you require additional nights and we can add that to your booking. The room rate is $199.00 per night.

As activities each day involve much walking on hilly terrain, a reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required to ensure maximum enjoyment. Previous tours have sold out fast, so we are offering a priority booking facility for this visit, plus accommodation options, depending on your plans for the weekend.
