President’s Column: May 2025

President’s Column: May 2025

There is nothing like walking around a desolate paddock admiring ancient stone Cairns to remind oneself about the importance of recognising the past. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel to the Highlands of Scotland to appreciate how history shapes our now and influences our future. The May selection of events developed for the Friends celebrates the modern era as well recognising the past.
The hidden layers of Wellington will be explored with well-known archeologist Mary O’Keeffe. She will take you on a city walking tour and share her insights into the history behind the everyday treasures left behind by the people who lived and worked in our city.
For those who wish to travel further afield, Sir David Moxon has developed a fascinating pilgrimage tour exploring the religious initiates that shaped the Waikato area and consequently influenced the wider development of society and communities throughout the country.
Closer to home but no less innovative is the tour of Hills Hats, a well-known and much-loved Wellington institution. This is a family run business whose hats have not only covered many a Wellingtonians head, they are collected and worn by the famous (and not so famous) around the world.
Taking a wider and more philosophical lens to the universe, we are pleased to welcome Chris McKeown on 3 June. A keen photographer, astrologer and mindfulness gruru Chris will remind us why it’s important to stop, take breath and look up.
Although we try hard to develop a wide range of experiences for our members sometimes it’s doesn’t work. The Darwin and Beyond tour has been cancelled due to low numbers. I am guessing that cocktails with crocodiles was a step too far.
Remember we also have our regular monthly Reading Group sessions on the third and fourth Thursday of the month. Entry is free, and the books discussed are topical, varied and interesting. The Te Papa Press sessions include a Q&A with the author and Friends receive concessions for sales on the day.
Getting the balance of experiences right is something we work on and we would like to see as many Friends as possible at our events. We know that Friends will be stimulated, entertained and intrigued. One of the strongest benefits of the Friends is in meeting like-minded people. If there is a topic you would like us to research, please email Holly.
Look out for our regular event updates and please do come if you can. We would also like to hear from any Friend interested in joining the Committee; please speak to any committee member or drop Holly a line.
Wishing you all the best from the Highlands, I look forward to catching up when I am back

Mazz Scannell
Acting President
