President’s Column: February 2026

President’s Column: February 2026

As we move further into the year, we have been planning our events for 2026, and a bit like the weather this summer we are also adapting, looking moving forward, and always finding moments of brightness even in the busiest periods

I’m delighted to share that we are arranging a March lecture with BBC broadcaster Julian Richards. Many of you will remember Julian’s Stonehenge lecture last year or know him from his long career in archaeology broadcasting, where his enthusiasm and clarity have brought the past vividly to life for audiences across the UK and beyond. He is best known for presenting the BBC series Meet the Ancestors and for his work on Blood of the Vikings, as well as for his numerous books and radio appearances. His ability to make complex archaeological stories accessible and engaging has earned him a loyal following, and we are very fortunate to welcome him. His lecture will be on ruins- those he has worked in and visited – it promises to be an engaging and entertaining session. Full details will follow once arrangements are finalised.

This month also brings a significant change within our team. Our Friends Coordinator, Holly Erwin will be leaving us at the end of the month, and while we are sad to see Holly go, we are grateful for the energy, dedication, and warmth she has have brought to the role over the almost three years she has supported the Friends. Her work has been central to strengthening the relationship between the organisation and our membership, who remain the backbone of everything we do.

We are now seeking a new Friends Coordinator — a stimulating, full time, sole charge position ideal for someone who enjoys working independently while building strong relationships. If you know of anyone who may be interested, please contact me for further details. Finding the right person will be essential to maintaining the momentum and connection that our Friends bring to the organisation.

Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support. Even as the weather shifts from one mood to another, the constancy of your commitment remains our greatest asset.

Kindest regards
Mazz
