2023 Chatham Islands Excursions

Since 2002 these excursions to the Chatham Islands has been offered to, and enjoyed by, many Friends of Te Papa. Touring with Hamish and Chris is a rare opportunity to visit the Chathams in a safe and convivial context. The plan is to visit Chatham and Pitt Island, sea and air conditions permitting.

Talk: Francis Pound on Gordon Walters

Visiting Auckland University Professor, Art Historian and Author Leonard Bell will give us wonderful insight on both the art of Gordon Walters (1919-1995) and the writing of Francis Pound
(1948-2017), in particular his just-published monograph on Walters (Auckland University Press, September 2023) and the circumstances of its writing and publication.

Talk: Hundertwasser: Art, Architecture and Environment

The Hundertwasser Art Centre with Wairau Māori Art Gallery celebrates art and architecture in harmony with nature and individual creativity. The Austrian New Zealand artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser was first and foremost a painter, but became involved in architecture and environmental activism because of his concerns about the exploitation of natural resources and ruthless urbanisation and industrialisation.

Day Trip to Pencarrow Lighthouse

Join us for a day trip this summer under the expert guidance of geologist, paleontologist and Emeritus Scientist Hamish Campbell.  We will take a leisurely drive around the harbour, as Hamish explains the Wellington Harbour, Wellington Fault, Wairarapa Fault, and Crustal and Active processes.  We will stop Eastbourne, before heading into East Harbour Regional Park and stopping at Pencarrow Lighthouse, where we will hear about it's history.  Next, we'll take a walk along the track around Lake Kohangapiripiri, and then find a nice place to stop and enjoy our lunch
