On display until 20 July is Winifred Knights’ The Marriage at Cana (1923). For the first time the painting has been displayed alongside a selection of Knights’ meticulous preparatory drawings, offering a window into her working methods and the layers of meaning within the painting.
Chelsea Nichols, Curator Modern Art, will present a floor talk in the gallery and, with the support of the preparatory drawings, discuss these layers of meaning.
Winifred Knights’ The Marriage at Cana is one of the treasures in Te Papa’s collection of early 20th century British art. The work is inspired by religious imagery in Renaissance painting and re-imagines the biblical miracle of turning water into wine.
Registration required. To register, use the ‘Book now’ button or phone the office on (04) 381 7051.
