Local gallery tours – March 2015

Thursday 19 March 2015, 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

Cash payment on the day

This event is now fully booked.

The first of our 2015 local gallery tours begins with a visit to two of the dealer galleries in Ghuznee Street. We start at Bartley + Company Art, 56A Ghuznee Street with a viewing of work by former Te Papa curator Huhana Smith.

Huhana Smith’s exhibition Tiaki has developed from a previous exhibition at City Gallery Wellington and continues her investigation of ecology and culture. Her painting plays out her research interests, exploring how Maori exercise kaitiakitanga (active guardianship) over ecosystems in agricultural and cultural landscapes. Since 2010 Huhana has been leading the research project Manaaki Taha Moana: Enhancing Coastal Ecosystems for Iwi with projects mostly located in her ancestral lands in coastal Horowhenua. These sites, particularly Kuku Beach where she lives, appear in her painting.

We then visit the Bowen Gallery at 41 Ghuznee Street to view an exhibition of work from Dunedin artists, curated by Inge Doesburg. This exhibition showcases a wide range of established and lesser known (but professional) artists from Dunedin. Inge says “It’s a nice snippet of contemporary art which is currently made in Dunedin; a mini showcase for the city as a creative centre.”

Following your tour, enjoy coffee or lunch at one of the nearby cafes.

This is event is now fully booked. To add your name to the waiting, email [email protected], or phone the office on (04) 381-7051.
