Rice – an American artist – painted Mansfield in 1918, when the writer was staying in Cornwall in an effort to restore her deteriorating health. Mansfield described the visit:

A. came early and began the great painting – me in that red, brick-red frock with flowers everywhere. It’s awfully interesting, even now. I painted her in my way as she painted me in hers: her eyes … little blue flowers plucked this morning.

Rebecca also compares Mansfield’s overseas experiences with those of Frances Hodgkins and Grace Joel – two of New Zealand’s most successful female expatriate artists.

Portrait of Katherine Mansfield and works by Hodgkins and Joel go on display on 19 October 2013 as part of the Spring season of Ngā Toi | Arts Te Papa.
