Friends’ Preview of Toi Art

Thursday 15 March 2018, 3:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Be among the first to see Toi Art, the new home of New Zealand’s national art collection.

Charlotte Davy, Head of Art at Te Papa says the new gallery will be a celebration of New Zealand identities, explored through both new art works and the lens of the national art collection. The exhibitions together give a sense of what New Zealand art is, and how it fits within the Pacific.

Spanning two floors, the newly built gallery offers an additional 35% more floor space and will feature four major exhibitions as well as commissions from leading artists – Michael Parekowhai and Tifffany Singh.

Kaleidoscope: Abstract Aotearoa, is an exploration of colour, shape and pattern in the Pacific, and includes a must-see immersive new artwork by contemporary artist Tiffany Singh.

Turangawaewae: Art and New Zealand is drawn from Te Papa’s extensive art collection and questions ideas of belonging in Aotearoa and offers different visions of how art might help us find a place to stand.

Included are two major retrospective shows by influential New Zealand artists: The Pacific Sisters, an artistic collective working across fashion, performance, music and film; and Lisa Walker, world renowned contemporary jeweller.

During the preview there will be a series of ‘hot-spot’ tours or talks of 15 minutes,in the gallery, giving you the chance to meet the curators and hear about the exhibitions.
