Dressing for Splendour

Sunday 2 October 2016, 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm

$15

Enjoy an illustrated talk about the luxurious garments featured in the Splendour exhibition. Discover 18th-century fashion, and watch how the experts get these intricate dresses ready for display.

Join Claire Regnault, Te Papa’s senior curator of history, and textiles conservator Anne Peranteau for a fascinating discussion about the rituals and fashions of the 1700s.

Claire explains stomachers, and stays, delves into London’s famous Spitalfields silk-weaving industry, touches on the fashion rivalry between England and France, and celebrates male sartorial splendor – including a contraband waistcoat and an anti-slavery medallion.

Anne explores some of the challenges of bringing 250 year-old garments to life in the museum, and demonstrates the process of getting one of them ready for display.
