Conservation Lab Tour 7:30pm

Thursday 27 June 2019, 7:30 pm - 8:10 pm

$10.00

Linda Waters, paintings conservator, will show us “Nature’s Adornment”, a late 19thC painting of the Umbrella Buttress in the Pink Terrace, as only a conservator does – mid treatment and in great detail – and gain insight into conservation processes that are otherwise unseen when the painting is on the wall. The painting is an intact 19thC ensemble in its original frame and is known to have been painted from a Burton Brothers photograph. It needs considerable conservation work and the treatment it requires illustrates many of the painting conservation processes undertaken in the laboratory, including art historical and technical investigation into the materials.

Anne Peranteau, conservator of Te Papa’s textile and dress collection, will share information relating to recent explorations in digital printing of textiles for conservation purposes.  Conservators have used digital methods to address intractable staining, to enable different modes of display and to create replicas especially in cases where portions of textiles are missing. A short overview with case studies will be presented.
