Join us for a Members Only exclusive tour behind the scenes in the museum. Ceramics and jewellery are two strengths of the contemporary decorative art collection at Te Papa. How and why do we seek to collect, and what are the main themes? The collections of decorative arts and design have been part of the art collection since the early 1950s.
Justine Olsen will take us behind the scenes into the collection store to show you how approaches in ceramics have changed between 1950 and 2020. These two tours will be followed in November by visits to the jewellery collections.
Justine Olsen’s (Curator Decorative Art & Design) expertise lies in decorative arts and design, with particular reference to New Zealand, both historical and contemporary. Current research includes New Zealand’s contribution to modernism during the modernism between 1945 and 1960 which will lead to a book by Te Papa Press on this subject.
