These iconic textiles wove a rich history and captivated the hearts of people across the world—literally, a rags-to-riches story. We will trace the journey of this textile from its humble beginnings as cool, comfortable, hand-dyed and woven cotton daily wear to a global phenomenon being sold through luxury boutiques and gracing haute couture runways to this day.

From a bright blue 1890s wedding dress with huge leg of mutton sleeves, to a throw away cellulose dress given out by the Campbell’s Soup Company in the 1960s, the collections represent both mass produced fashion and bespoke one-off garments.
This tour will give an insight into some of the objects and the work curators and collection managers do to care for them.
