Tour: Behind the Scenes, William Hodges in Toi Art ii

Join Art Historian, David Maskill and Rebecca Rice, Curator Historical NZ Art, for a close encounter with paintings and prints by William Hodges, artist on board Captain Cook’s second voyage to Aotearoa and the Pacific from 1772-75. The tour will begin in the exhibition Tamatea: Legacies of encounter, which showcases Te Papa’s recent acquisition of Hodges painting Waterfall in Dusky Bay with Maori Canoe, before heading back of house for an intimate viewing.

Rebecca Rice is an art historian who specialises in in the field of colonial New Zealand art, with a particular interest in the histories of collecting, exhibition, and display. Her current research focuses on the visual culture of the New Zealand Wars, and the impact of impressionism on New Zealand artists at home and abroad.

David Maskill was Senior Lecturer in art history at Victoria University of Wellington until 2019. He has published widely on aspects of the history of prints in international journals such as Print Quarterly. In 2000, he organised the first student-curated exhibition at the university’s Adam Art Gallery on the prints made from the travels of European artists to the Pacific from the 17th century to Gauguin.
