Join other Friends of Te Papa at Page Blackie Gallery to hear Dick Frizzell talk about an historic retrospective exhibition of his works on paper.
A broad range of Frizzell’s subject matter and styles is represented in this survey show, including stunning New Zealand landscapes, intriguing still lifes, ironic clichés and humorous parodies on modernist abstraction.
The exhibition also includes preliminary studies for some of Frizzell’s most pivotal artworks, dating from 1972 until the present day. Despite his reputation as an anti-traditionalist artist who deliberately blurs the boundaries between ‘high’ and ‘low’ art, these pieces reveal his immensely traditional manner in approaching and developing an artwork.
