Gallery Tour (ii): Frances Hodgkins
Monday 2 November, 11am - 12pm
In response to popular demand, we are thrilled to offer members a repeat private tour to Adam Art Gallery – Te Pātaka Toi.
Join us for a mid morning viewing of Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki’s touring exhibition Frances Hodgkins: European Journeys which traces Hodgkins’ life through France, Morocco and Spain to her final days in England. Featuring more than 65 works produced between 1901 and 1946, the exhibition tracks her unique engagement with modernism, examining the influence of location on her development as a painter, and exploring how travel and journeying served her as sources of artistic inspiration. For this last New Zealand venue the exhibition has been specially re-conceived for the gallery’s unique spaces, and includes works from local collections.
We will be guided through the galleries spaces which include the newly commissioned, site-specific, wall painting Double Portrait in the Congreve Foyer. Based on a careful engagement with two paintings by Hodgkins: Double Portrait (Friends), (1925) and Wings over Water, (1931–2), this work by artist Imogen Taylor and architect Sue Hillery adds one more to the lineup of contemporary practitioners in 19 Gallery (2019). We will hear about the commissioned paintings and sculptures by 19 New Zealand artists, based upon 34 Gallery whose name symbolised both the year it was created and the number of artworks featured in the display, and which included two paintings by Frances Hodgkins.
