Filming Gallipoli: myths and reality

Thursday 11 June 2015, 10:30 am - 11:30 am

$10.00

Join Christopher as he dissects the 1918 Australian epic film Heroes of the Dardanelles, edited by official Australian historian CEW Bean.

The original combat footage of New Zealand, British and Australian soldiers was made by an inexperienced but able film-maker, Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett. This talk considers whether Bean misrepresented these images of New Zealand and British troops in action to bolster Australian myth-making.

Dr Christopher Pugsley was Exhibition Historical Director for Te Papa’s Gallipoli exhibition.
