Day Trip: Geological Highlights of Wellington with Hamish Campbell

***SOLD OUT***Following on from his recent sell-out talk, geologist, paleontologist and Emeritus Scientist Hamish Campbell returns with a unique opportunity to join him for a guided day trip of Wellington’s significant geological sites, drawing on his expert local knowledge for our commentary.  Participants will be transported by bus, please see the itinerary curated for Friends of Te Papa below.  Places are limited to 35 for this tour.

Itinerary:

  • 9:30am: Meet and depart from Platform 9 at Wellington Railway Station, with a secondary pick-up stop at Te Papa.
  • We begin our journey with a coach ride around Wellington Peninsula
  • Stop 1: Wahine Memorial, Seatoun (public toilets available at this location)
  • Stop 2: Breaker Bay, entrance of Wellington Harbour
  • Stop 3: Princess Bay (public toilets available at this location)
  • Stop 4: Owhiro Bay Quarry
  • Lunch Stop: Owhiro Bay Information Centre.  Please bring a cut lunch.  Coffee and tea available from the local coffee cart run by Lisa. (public toilets available at this location)
  • Stop 4: Top of Wrights Hill above Karori (via Happy Valley to CBD, then Tinakori Road & Glenmore Street up to Karori, then Campbell Road and Wrights Hill Road)
  • Stop 5: Futuna Chapel, Karori (public toilets available at this location)
  • 4:00 pm: Return to Te Papa and Wellington Railway Station

What to bring:

  • Cut lunch and water bottle
  • Suitable outdoor clothing
  • Walking shoes and/or boots (will be walking on beaches, sand, rock, grass)
  • Sticks

 

Hamish Campbell is a Wellington-based geologist, paleontologist and science communicator, and is an Emeritus Scientist with GNS Science. He was a geologist at Te Papa for 20 years (1998-2019) and will be known to many Friends of Te Papa for his role leading annual excursions to the Chatham Islands, and more recently Kaikoura, Golden Bay and New Caledonia. He is still actively involved in research and is especially interested in the origin of the older rocks of NZ.
