Day trip: Dutch and local heritage in Foxton

Sunday 18 July 2021, 8:30 am - 5:45 pm

$100.00

Don’t miss your chance to have a hassle free day out with your friends, and beat those mid-winter blues! We know that you love a jaunt out of town so join us when we visit art from Te Papa at Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom ( ‘the new stream’). This vibrant state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to telling the story of Foxton and its people, and symbolises New Zealand cultures and communities being brought together.

Our visit will include the Piriharakeke Generation Inspiration Centre, a Māori museum, arts and learning centre which celebrates the local stories, treasures, language and art of the local Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga people; and the Oranjehof Dutch Connection Centre, which showcases the stories and treasures of one of Aotearoa’s largest migrant groups, the New Zealand Dutch community.

You will gain an understanding of a small town’s united community effort to preserve its special character, in this case the interaction of the local iwi and Dutch heritage in Foxton, while appreciating that a small museum can feature major artists.

We will tour the Leon van den Eijkel Retrospective: A Colourful Nation. This major overview of works by Leon van den Eijkel – from his formative years to today – shows his journey as an artist who changes countries and cultures. He brings together the formalism of the typically Dutch ‘Mondriaan’ tradition, with the freedom and exuberance of the New Zealand light and landscape. Work featured in the exhibition is on loan from the Te Papa collections.

We will also visit the full-size replica Dutch windmill and watch it at work grinding local corn; and the Foxton Flax Stripper Museum, to discover the history of the flax industry in Foxton. Our day-long visit will finish at the MAVtech museum, which holds a hundred years-worth of audio-visual equipment from film projectors to phonographs.

The bus will leave from Te Papa’s Tory Street facility (169) at 8.30am and arrive back at the same location at 5.45pm.

The tour cost will include coach travel, all entry fees, a welcome morning tea, a special talk by a local historian, and a delicious lunch where you will be able to taste some traditional Dutch delicacies.
