Curator’s Talk: Native Plants of Aotearoa

Thursday 11 May 2023, 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

$25.00 – $30.00

Botany Curators Heidi Meudt and Carlos Lehnebach will talk about their recently published book, Native Plants of Aotearoa. The book describes and showcases 50 of our native plant species, beautifully illustrated by black and white drawings produced over 250 years ago by Sydney Parkinson while on the Endeavour during Captain’s Cook first voyage to Aotearoa New Zealand. They will talk about the history of the illustrations, how they were made, and how they ended up in Te Papa’s collection. Carlos and Heidi will also share highlights from their research on some of the species featured in the book, and share with you their favourite plants and illustrations.

Dr Carlos Lehnebach (Te Papa Curator Botany) studies the diversity, evolution and conservation of New Zealand flowering plants. His main groups of interest are terrestrial and epiphytic orchids, alpine plants, and plants shared with other land masses in the Southern Hemisphere.

Dr Heidi Meudt (Te Papa Curator Botany) is a researcher whose collections-based research focuses on the evolution and classification of native New Zealand flowering plants, especially forget-me-nots. Her research aims to update the taxonomy and conservation status of all native forget-me-nots.

Ticket includes talk, parking and a glass of wine. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
