Bone Stone Shell: 25 Years On

Thursday 21 November 2013, 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

$15.00 – $20.00

This event is fully booked.

Justine Olsen (Curator Decorative Art & Design) explores the legacy of the landmark 1988 exhibition Bone Stone Shell with examples from Te Papa’s collection of contemporary jewellery.

Bone Stone Shell represented a new way of thinking about materials and place. Instead of looking to Europe, jewellers and carvers drew inspiration from influences closer to home – in particular, a rich tradition of Māori and Pacific adornment.

The Friends of Te Papa generously gifted Bone Stone Shell to Te Papa in 1993.

From 19 October 2013, you can see the original Bone Stone Shell exhibition, its influences, and some of its inheritors in the Collections Focus gallery, Level 5 – part of the Spring season of Ngā Toi | Arts Te Papa.

Registration required – numbers limited. To book your place, send us an email using the ‘Book now’ button, or phone the office on (04) 381-7051
