Mon 19 Apr 27: Istanbul
Welcome to Istanbul. On arrival at Istanbul International Airport, please clear customs and
immigration then use exit gate number 13 to meet with the airport representative at sign M55 for
your transfer. Please don’t wait inside the airport building, you need to go outside of the building by
using gate 13 to sign M55. Transfer by coach to your hotel where accommodation is reserved for three nights. Welcome drinks
and canapes tonight (venue to be confirmed).

Tue 20 Apr 27: Istanbul (BLD)
Discover the timeless allure of Istanbul on a full-day city tour that seamlessly blends imperial
grandeur with cultural charm. Begin your journey at the magnificent Hagia Sophia, a masterpiece of
Byzantine architecture, before visiting the elegant Blue Mosque, famed for its striking domes and
intricate blue İznik tiles. Continue to the historic Hippodrome of Constantinople, once the social and
sporting heart of the Byzantine Empire, then explore the opulent Topkapi Palace, home to Ottoman
sultans for centuries and filled with priceless treasures. Descend into the atmospheric Basilica
Cistern, where rows of ancient columns rise from softly lit waters in a truly unforgettable setting.

Wed 21 Apr 27: Istanbul (BLD)
Today, step into the cosmopolitan heart of Istanbul on a captivating tour through its historic and
bohemian districts. Begin at the iconic Sirkeci Railway Terminal, built in 1890 to receive passengers
from the Paris to Istanbul Orient Express—famously associated with Dame Agatha Christie. From here, explore the vibrant neighbourhoods of Galata, Karakoy, and Taksim, uncovering the
cultural layers of the city along lively Istiklal Street. Discover architectural and cultural gems
including the Santa Maria Draperis Church established in 1876, one of the most ancient catholic
parishes in Istanbul. grand Church of Saint Anthony of Padua built in 1875. Pass by the prestigious
Galatasaray High School and wander through historic arcades such as Cicek Pasaji, Avrupa Pasaji,
and Hazzopulo Passage, each echoing with stories of Istanbul’s multicultural past. Continue to the
beautifully restored Narmanli Han originally built in 1831 and restored in 2011. Continue to the
medieval Galata Tower, originally built as a watch tower. Descend the elegant curves of the
Kamondo Stairs, a hidden architectural gem linking the districts below. Conclude your day at the
legendary Pera Palace Hotel, a historic landmark built to host passengers from the Orient Express
Train, once hosting illustrious guests such as Dame Agatha Christie, Ernest Hemmingway and Greta
Garbo. Arrive in time to listen to piano melodies and a refined happy hour in its elegant setting,
includes a welcome drink. Your evening continues with dinner at a nearby local restaurant.

Thu 22 Apr 27: Istanbul – Canakkale (BD)
Travel south from Istanbul to Canakkale, travelling through scenic countryside and along the shores
of the Sea of Marmara. Today begin your exploration of the Gallipoli Peninsula and the broader
campaign with a visit to the Helles sector. Sites include Namazgah Battery and Rumeli Mecidiye
Battery where a life-sized statue of Corporal Seyit a former timber cutter, reputed to have fired the
gun which sank the British battleship HMS Ocean stands. Continue to the top of Alcitepe,
(Achibaba) which offers panoramic views over the Peninsula, it was near here that the NZ Division
made its ill-fated attack across the Daisy Patch during the Second Battle of Krithia 08 May 1915.
Continue to the Cape Helles Memorial to the Missing, the Lancashire Landing Cemetery which
includes the graves of 12 men who served with the NZ Expeditionary Force, X and V Beaches, two of
the five landing beaches on 25 April; and to one of four memorials erected to commemorate New
Zealand soldiers the Commonwealth Twelve Trees Copse Cemetery. Continue to the port and cross
the Dardanelles by ferry to Canakkale and transfer to your hotel. Dinner this evening is at your
hotel.

Fri 23 Apr 27: Canakkale – Gallipoli & Landing Beaches – Canakkale (BD)
Travel by ferry across the Dardanelles to the Gallipoli Peninsula for a special day for New Zealand
and Australian sites including visits to Anzac Cove, Nek, Chunuk Bair, Lone Pine Cemetery, the 57th
Regiment Memorial, Hill 60 and Johnston’s Jolly Cemetery, plus other key sites. The assault on
Gallipoli by New Zealand and Australian forces, in their own contingents for the first time in foreign
service, is considered by many to have been the birth of national consciousness for these two
countries. For the Turks, then part of the Ottoman Empire, the war is regarded as the defining
moment in the birth of the Turkish nation, with independence following just 8 years later. This
afternoon, visit Kabatepe Simulation Center for a 3D recreation of many of the historical events of
the campaign, then board a local boat for a trip along the coastline to gain a sea perspective of the Gallipoli landing beaches. View Brighton Beach, Beach Cemetery, the Ari Burnu Cemetery which lies
between the beach and the cliff under Plugge’s Plateau, approximately 1,000 metres northwest of
Lone Pine, and the ANZAC Commemorative site at North Beach. Later return to your hotel. Dinner is
included this evening.

Sat 24 Apr 27: Canakkale – Troy – Canakkale (BD)
This morning, depart for Troy. Discover the Trojan Horse, Sacrificial Altars, the 3700-year-old city
walls, Houses of Troy I 3000 BC-2500 BC, the Bouleuterion (Senate Building), the Odeon (Concert
Hall) as well as the remains of the various cities from Troy I through to Troy IX. Return to Çanakkale
to visit the Çanakkale Naval Museum, home to a compelling collection of artifacts, naval exhibits,
and wartime relics that illuminate the strategic importance of the Dardanelles and the region’s rich
naval history. This afternoon is at leisure. This evening, an early dinner in a local restaurant and time
to relax before tomorrow’s programme.

Sun 25 Apr 27: Gallipoli – ANZAC DAY SERIVCE (Breakfast & Lunch Box + D)
Very early this morning, you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to the Gallipoli
Peninsula. There are various security checks, to the entrance of the commemorations. Please bring
your passport for ID. A commemorative program will take place in the morning – an atmosphere
filled with anticipation, where sleep is unlikely to be part of the night. *A light breakfast box is
provided today
The schedule for Anzac Day Commemorations may vary. Below is the proposed programme:
5:30am: Dawn Service at Anzac cove 11:45am: New Zealand Service at Chunuk Bair
This profoundly emotional day begins at dawn. Participate in the commemorative Dawn Service to
remember and honour the countless lives lost. Following the Dawn Service, pay your respects at the
battlefields and join the New Zealand service at Chunuk Bair. In the afternoon following collection
from the Chunuk Bair site, return to the port for your ferry to Canakkale. Dinner is included this
evening at your hotel.

Important Notes:
Please come prepared for cooler conditions with a hat, gloves, warm socks, scarf, and a warm jacket. It is also recommended to bring a torch, rug, notebook, and energy snacks for the day and lighter clothing for the daytime. A small lightweight day pack is useful for carrying your food boxes, water bottle, and snacks. Due to security measures, there is a long walk to the Dawn Service and up the hill to Chunuk Bair, so sturdy walking shoes are essential. The Ministry of Heritage and Culture provides shuttles both to the Dawn Service and the 7km up to Chunuk Bair, via its official registration site once it is launched. Toilet facilities on the Peninsula will be basic, like port-a-loos. The itinerary for 24–25 April 2027 may be adjusted depending on final timings at the Gallipoli Peninsula. Due to security checks, expect delays.

Mon 26 Apr 27: Canakkale – Pergamum – Kusadasi (BD)
After breakfast at the hotel, drive to Pergamum, the capital of the Hellenistic Attalid Dynasty.
Explore the impressive Acropolis of Pergamum, perched atop a high, steep-sided hill—one of the
most spectacular acropolises of the ancient world. Continue across the Ida Mountains before
arriving in Kusadasi for a two-night stay. Dinner is included this evening.

Tue 27 Apr 27: Kusadasi – Ephesus – Sirince – Kusadasi (B)
This morning, take a short drive to the ancient city of Ephesus. Explore its magnificent library,
theatre, and temples, and stroll along some 2,000-year-old marbled streets. Capture the
significance of the Library of Celsus and Hadrian’s Temple. Afterwards, visit the House of the Virgin
Mary, a revered pilgrimage site believed to be where Mary spent her final days. You will also have
the opportunity to discover and understand the rich history behind local handicrafts, including
handmade carpets and tiles. Continue to the village of Sirince, one of the most beautiful villages in
Turkey, with free time for shopping or sample the local wines, with the opportunity to purchase
lunch. This evening dinner is your own choice, perhaps at one of the many sea food restaurants.

Wed 28 Apr 27: Kusadasi – Pamukkale (BD)
Travel through fertile plains and cotton farms en route to Pamukkale, where you’ll explore one of
Türkiye’s most striking natural wonders. Meaning “Cotton Castle” in Turkish, Pamukkale is famed for
its dazzling white travertine terraces formed by mineral-rich thermal waters. Take in the beauty of
these limestone pools before continuing to the nearby ancient city of Laodicea on the Lycus.
Renowned for its impressive ruins, Laodicea was one of the important cities of the ancient world
and is mentioned in the New Testament as one of the Seven Churches of Revelation. Overnight stay
in Pamukkale. Dinner this evening is at your hotel.

Thu 29 Apr 27: Pamukkale – Cappadocia (BLD)
After breakfast, an early start and travel inland toward the captivating landscapes of Cappadocia. En
route, short stop in Konya, the spiritual heart of the Seljuk Sultanate. Continue your journey passing
rolling plains, rugged hills, and traditional villages along the way. Late this afternoon, arrive in
Cappadocia, where your accommodation is reserved for a three-night stay.
To allow for a three-night stay at Cappadocia, please note that today is a longer day of travel.

Fri 30 Apr 27: Cappadocia (B)
Optional (supplement applies): Early morning Balloon ride
Start your day with an optional hot air balloon ride before sunrise. A light breakfast will be served
while the pilots check conditions, then take off for a breathtaking aerial view of Cappadocia’s unique landscape. After a one-hour flight, celebrate with a traditional champagne toast and receive a
commemorative flight certificate.

After breakfast, visit the Goreme Open Air Museum, renowned for its Byzantine cave churches.
Continue to Pashabagi, also known as Monks Valley, and Devrent Valley, nicknamed “Imagination
Valley” for its surreal rock formations. After lunch, explore Avanos and Urgup, known for traditional
pottery, with a pottery demonstration included. Upon completion of the tour, return to your hotel.
Dinner this evening own arrangements, to perhaps sample local restaurant fare. Your guide will
provide suggestions.

Sat 01 May 27: Cappadocia (BD)
After breakfast at your hotel, depart on the South Cappadocia Tour. Your first stop is Uchisar Castle,
offering panoramic views of the region. Continue to the Underground City, one of Cappadocia’s
most well-preserved subterranean complexes. Then, walk through Love Valley and Rose Valley,
named for the striking rose-coloured rock formations. Conclude with a visit to Cavusin Village before
returning to your hotel. A farewell dinner is included this evening.

Sun 02 May 27: Cappadocia – Istanbul (B)
Today you will be transferred to Cappadocia Airport in for your flight to Istanbul, with the option to
extend to Cairo for a continuation of the Friends of Te Papa tour to Egypt.

Turkey and Gallipoli Tour

To secure your place please fill out the tour registration form. An initial deposit of NZD
$1,500 will be required per person, along with a registration form completed and
returned to Innovative Travel. An interim deposit will be required, $3000 on 01 Nov
2026. Full payment due 01 Feb 2027.

TURKEY IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Dress Codes: Modest dress is required for entrance to holy sites – Men: Long pants, Women –
skirt or long pants and shoulders covered.
Hotels: On coach tours, hotels in regional areas can be of a slightly lower standard than the other
hotels on the tour.
Sightseeing: All sightseeing tours require walking around historical / cultural sites. This is
particularly true in Gallipoli and Cappadocia where walks can be up to 2 km long and where a
good level of hill fitness will ensure you get a maximum benefit from your visit.
Optional Tours: Optional tours offered may not be guaranteed (even if pre-booked ex New
Zealand) as they are subject to a minimum number of participants. Balloon flights in Cappadocia
are subject to weather.

Transfers:
Information for meeting your transfer driver is included in your final documentation who will
hold a sign with your name or the group name. If you are unable to find your transfer, please

Holiday preparation: Before your holiday, please make sure that you check and comply with
specific local requirements such as visas, international driving licence, vaccinations, travel
insurance etc. as they vary from one country to the other and change frequently.
Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months prior to your return to NZ.

Tipping: Tipping is an accepted practice throughout the world. In most countries tipping acts as a
supplement to a basic wage. If you believe you have received efficient service, then service
should be rewarded. To assist you in determining a fair and reasonable tip Innovative Travel has
calculated tipping for all group activities. This will be invoiced with your final payment.
These guidelines have been determined in consultation with our local operators to minimise the
potential stress tipping may cause.

On a lighter note: Please remember that religious beliefs, traditional customs and daily manners
may differ from country to country, these may seem quite strange at first. These idiosyncrasies
are part of what makes travelling a special experience. Please be patient if you think things are
happening at a different pace than you are used to and respect the differences in culture.
