The Value of the Friends of Te Papa

Sunday was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the International Federation of Friends of Museums Day with our members through a range of special activities. We enjoyed an uplifting performance by the Faultline Chorus and celebrated the winners of the Te Papa Friends Photographer of the Year Awards. Members also had the opportunity to tour the engines and systems that make Te Papa tick. It was a memorable day of friendship, learning and shared experiences.

These opportunities demonstrate the vital role The Friends of Te Papa play in strengthening the connection between Aotearoa New Zealand’s national museum and the communities it serves. As advocates and supporters our members help foster a deeper appreciation of Te Papa’s collections, exhibitions, research and public programmes. Through lectures, tours and shared experiences, we create opportunities for lifelong learning and meaningful engagement with our cultural heritage.

Beyond the direct benefits to members, Friends groups provide an important bridge between museums and the public. Internationally, museums increasingly recognise that Friends organisations contribute far more than financial support. They build audiences, encourage volunteering, promote philanthropy and help museums remain relevant and accessible to diverse communities.

The Friends of Te Papa are proud to be part of a wider national and international network of museum supporters. Through our connections with organisations across New Zealand and membership of the World Federation of Friends of Museums, we join a global group representing more than two million museum friends worldwide. The federation promotes collaboration, the sharing of best practice, and the belief that communities play an essential role in preserving and celebrating cultural heritage. It also encourages intergenerational engagement.

As Te Papa's Friends, we bring a distinctive Aotearoa voice to this international community, sharing approaches shaped by our unique cultural landscape while learning from colleagues around the world.

In an era when cultural institutions face increasing demands and expectations, the value of a strong Friends organisation has never been greater. We are more than an affinity group; we are active partners in ensuring that Te Papa remains a vibrant, accessible and inspiring institution for future generations.

We are always keen to improve our offering to our Friends. If you have any suggestions or recommendations please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you.

Warmest regards

Mazz Scannell
