A Waikato Pilgrimage Tour

A Waikato Pilgrimage Tour

24 - 27 September 2026

The Friends of Te Papa Waikato Tour provided a deeply enriching exploration of the history, faith, and cultural heritage that helped shape the Waikato region. Led by Sir David Moxon, whose knowledge and passion brought each site to life, participants gained valuable insights into the complex relationships between Māori communities, early Christian missions, settlers, and the wider development of the region.

A particular highlight was the warm welcomes and kōrero shared by local kaumātua, including Professor Tom Roa, Sean Ellison, and Tame Pokaia. Their personal stories and connections to the land offered a meaningful perspective that greatly enhanced the experience. Visits to significant sites such as Matakitaki Pā, the Alexandria Redoubt, Whaingaroa Raglan, Kaitotehe Pā, and Taupiri Maunga provided an opportunity to reflect on important moments in New Zealand’s history.

Many enjoyed the visit to Maungatautari Sanctuary Mountain, where a walk through native forest showcased the beauty of original bush and birdlife. The Raglan Museum also proved popular, with its engaging exhibitions highlighting influential figures such as Wīremu Neera Te Awaitaia and Eva Rickard.

Throughout the tour, the combination of expert commentary, cultural engagement and stunning landscapes created a memorable experience. Participants returned home with a greater appreciation of Waikato’s unique history and the enduring connections between people, place, and faith.

“A very interesting trip, with an excellent guide (David) . His range of contacts is extremely impressive and clearly they all respect him greatly. The tour was well organised for just the right amount of activities. Many thanks to Katrina for organising this and to David for being our guide. Thanks too to our excellent bus driver, Dave.”

“The pace was leisurely, but I think David was right - this gave us time for the new places and new information we were receiving to gradually sink in. The information gathering opportunities balanced well with the associated social times. Both were important.”

“It was a well organised warm and friendly tour… most informative and with a wonderful leader in Sir David Moxon. Thank you, Katrina.
