Guided Tour of Toi MAHARA, Kāpiti Coast District Gallery
Make a day of it with the Friends! Drive or take the train to the gallery, bring a friend, enjoy a relaxed lunch on the Kāpiti Coast, and join us for a special guided tour of Toi MAHARA. This is a wonderful chance to explore the gallery together as a community. The cost is $10 per person, payable at the gallery on arrival. 20 places are available; please register your interest by emailing the office at friends@tepapa.govt.nz so we can plan for group numbers.
Toi MAHARA Director Janet Bayly and Curator Vicki Robson will take visitors on a tour of the gallery’s four exhibition spaces and collections.

Ngā Hononga: The interconnectedness of all things, Our Lady of Kāpiti School Children’s Creations
Alongside a tour of current exhibitions, you can view selected works from the Toi MAHARA collections including the nationally significant Field Collection with works by notable New Zealand artists such as Frances Hodgkins.
Due to the limited size of the Collection Store, we will split the group in two, with one group visiting the Collection Store while the other views the exhibitions. Visitors will have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the tour.
About the curators
Janet Bayly has been director curator of Toi MAHARA since 2006. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (1976) and a Master of Fine Arts (1979) in photography, film and art history from Elam School of Fine Arts, University of Auckland, and has worked for numerous galleries and museums around New Zealand.
Vicki Robson is curator at Toi MAHARA with responsibility for the Field Collection which includes 24 works by Frances Hodgkins. She was formerly curator of European and International Art at Te Papa and has specialist interests in European fine prints and modern British art.
Getting here
Toi MAHARA is easily accessed by train – it’s an hour’s train ride from Wellington and a short walk from Waikanae train station. Explore your journey options here.
By car Toi MAHARA is 40 minutes north of Wellington and is easy to find – use the Waikanae off-ramp and turn right onto Te Moana Road, then left onto Marae Lane.

Plenty of free parking is located behind Toi MAHARA on Marae Lane, or in the public car park outside Woolworths.

Toi MAHARA is committed to being open and accessible to all and has step-free access throughout its public spaces, as well as accessible toilets.
