SUMMARY:Slow Burn: Slow Down
DESCRIPTION:Join Museum Education Specialist Laura Jones for an engaging session where we use strategies to help us slow down and enjoy looking at art! Going to an art gallery can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming\, so much to see and so little time. The average person spends less than 30 seconds viewing a work of art. Slow art or slow looking is an observation style gaining traction around the world that aims to change this through intentionally observing art. \nWe’ll spend some time with new Toi Art exhibition Slow Burn: Women and Photography | Ahi Tāmau: Māreikura Whakaahua\, which showcases the diversity of photography by women and non-binary artists in Aotearoa New Zealand from the 1960s to today. This major survey exhibition from Te Papa’s collections sparks a conversation between past and present – exploring themes of identity\, whānau\, place\, and connections across time. The exhibition also asks: what influence did the first and second wave of feminism have on photographers today? \nWhat happens if we slow down and really spend some time with an artwork\, get to know it and make some personal connections to it?  No one in this session will tell you how to think about an artwork\, you will make your own discoveries and create your own meanings\, with some discussion and fun along the way! \nOptional stools can be provided. \n  \n\nImage credit: Becki Moss\, Fran Robertson\, from the series ‘Stay Home Club’ 2022. SUMMARY:Caravaggio
DESCRIPTION:In 1571 an artist was born who would bring about one of the most radical changes in pictorial styles\, particularly through his pronounced use of contrasting light and shadow\, or chiaroscuro.  He was the most famous painter of his time in Italy\, as well as a source of inspiration for hundreds of other artists.  Known as Caravaggio\, his given name was Michelangelo Merisi\, but though he had the name of an angel\, he was anything but\, being a notorious brawler and spending his last years on the run from a murder charge.  This lecture will introduce you to the drama of the life and the art of Caravaggio. \nThis event is brought to you in association with Wellington Arts Society. \n  \nRosalind Whyte holds a BA and MA from Goldsmith’s College\, and an MA (distinction) from Birkbeck College. Experienced guide at Tate Britain\, Tate Modern\, the Royal Academy and Greenwich. Lectures at Tate\, to independent art societies and on cruises.\n  \n  \nAbove image: Caravaggio; The Supper at Emmaus.
