President’s Column: October 2015

Tēnā koutou

Many of you enjoyed the chance to see back-of-house at Te Papa’s Tory Street Store, during the Capital Open House weekend marking 150 years since Wellington became the nation’s capital.

Our National Museum is also marking its 150th birthday this year. Te Papa, then known as the Colonial Museum, began life as a small scientific collection under the directorship of Sir James Hector. So it was timely that the Friends recently ran a series of science lectures, highlighting a wide variety of research from nine of Te Papa’s scientists. Te Papa’s science team are part of an international community. Their work is recognised and highly esteemed word-wide and it was fascinating to meet them and learn about their research.

Continuing our science theme and celebrating 150 years, in early October Simon Nathan, geologist, science historian and author will present a lecture James Hector: The hurricane years in association with the publication of his book  James Hector: explorer + scientist + leader.

After Augustus Hamilton became director of the Museum in 1903, Te Papa began developing the collections of Maori art and artefacts. The Friends Committee are currently enjoying learning a little Te Reo Maori, working with Joan Costello, Te Papa’s Kaiako or Te Reo teacher. It is a wonderful opportunity which we will be looking to share with members next year.

Nga mihi nui
