President’s Column: July 2015

Tēnā koutou

Firstly, I would like to thank the Friends for my election to the role of President and to thank former President Gordon Shroff for his part in handing over an organisation in such great shape. Members have enjoyed a wonderful programme over the last few years. Your support for Friends events is much appreciated.

Since opening 17 years ago, Te Papa has been the top destination for visitors to Wellington. The museum has just reached a new record of over 2,000 visitors a day. Air New Zealand 75 Years has had huge appeal. Gallipoli: the scale of our war is outstanding and will have an enormous impact for some time. These exhibitions reflect the immense depth of scholarship, talent and skill of Te Papa’s staff.

Now over 20 exhibitions, many of which date from Te Papa’s opening, are to be refreshed. The Friends have much to contribute towards the new environment planned for Te Papa and we will be looking for new ways in which members can be involved.  While this refreshment is underway, your new committee is committed to ensuring a full and interesting programme for Friends. My vision is to ensure that we remain a strong and lively organisation and, with the committee, I am looking forward to continuing the Friends’ contribution to the richness of our national museum.

Nga mihi nui
