St Mary of the Angels, a Boulcott Street landmark, was the destination for a recent visit for Friends of Te Papa.
This Category 1 heritage building is the third church built on this site. Designed by well-known architect Frederick de Jersey Clere, St Mary of the Angels is an outstanding example of “ferro-concrete” Gothic design and is certainly his best known church.
The recent Seddon earthquakes, hastened the plans to earthquake strengthen this building and after almost 4 years of strengthening work it was officially reopened in April 2017. In his tour of this beautiful and historic church, Father Barry Scannell gave us a detailed and fascinating account of this strengthening work.
Vivienne Morrell wrote an account of our visit and published the article on her website. It is a fascinating account and you can read it here.
Our tour was so popular, demand exceeded the numbers limit. A repeat tour has been scheduled on Tuesday 26 September – details here.
